Registration: Race and Ethnicity Requirements

To help practices comply with Meaningful Use Stage 2, athenaNet requires that the front desk staff ask the patient for their race and ethnicity at the point of patient registration. For API users whose application is checking in/registering patients, the solution’s user interface must have Race and Ethnicity as required fields.

Race is the patient's racial affiliation. The API will return the most common race values that are used for the practice’s patients. In the POST API, there is a "Patient Declined" option for patients who do not wish to provide an answer to the Race question when registering with the practice. Note: athenaNet uses the CDC Race and Ethnicity Code Set Version 1.0 for races. Consult hl7.org for a more detailed explanation.

Ethnicity is the patient's ethnic group affiliation. The API will return the most common ethnic values that are used for the practice’s patients. In the POST API, there is a "Patient Declined" option for patients who do not wish to provide an answer to the Ethnicity question when registering with the practice. Note: athenaNet uses the CDC Race and Ethnicity Code Set Version 1.0 for ethnicities. Consult hl7.org for a more detailed explanation.
